Description
Painting: Oil on Canvas, cm 50×70
This painting was inspired by the artistic and religious tradition of the “Mater Dolorosa” (from Latin), a name by which is often invoked by the Christian Mary, the mother of Jesus. This is obviously my modern interpretation of the figure of Maria.
The name “Mater Dolorosa” is based on some moments of Mary’s life described in the Gospels and Traditionally, Christians have enucleated seven sorrows of Mary. This painting refers to the first of the seven sorrows and describes the moment when the old prophet Simeon announces to Mary the difficulties that she will have to face and overcome.
Luke 2:34–35
34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
